Petite Galerie du Louvre
The Petite Galerie exhibtion for 2017–2018 focuses on the connection between art and political power. Governing entails self-presentation as a way of affirming authority, legitimacy, and prestige. Thus art in the hands of patrons becomes a propaganda tool; but it can also be a vehicle for protest and subverting the established order.
Spanning the period from antiquity to the present day, fifty works from the Musée du Louvre, the Musée national du Château de Pau, the Château de Versailles, and the Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris illustrate the evolution of the codes behind the representation of political power.
By providing keys to the observation and explanation of different artworks, the Petite Galerie sets out to make the visit to the museum an enjoyable and enlightening experience. Informative labels and digital touchscreen displays encourage attention to detail and help to established context. Five themed tours of the Louvre's permanent collection are also proposed.
FRANCOIS I AND DUTCH ART

François I's taste for Italian art is well known; his patronage is essentially identified with the creation of an Italian school at Fontainebleau, but his reign was equally marked by a vigorous tradition of Dutch artists settling in France.
The best-known Northern artists active in France during is reign—Jean Clouet and Corneille de la Haye known as Corneille de Lyon—were portrait specialists. The exhibition offers an exceptional presentation of the painted oeuvre of Jean Clouet (only around twenty panels are confirmed to be by the artist), as well as a few rare preparatory drawings, sketched from life.
As well as Paris, the Norman, Picard, Champagne, and Burgundian centers were swept by a wave of Northern influences—from Antwerp, Brussels, Leiden, Haarlem—in the art of manuscript illumination and religious painting. Recent research has gradually revealed painters unjustly consigned to oblivion: Godefroy le Batave, Noel Bellemare, Grégoire Guérard, and Bartholomeus Pons are only some of the artists who excelled in media as diverse as illumination, painting, stained glass, tapestry, and sculpture. The king made extensive purchases of tapestries, gold and silver objets d'art, and Flemish paintings. A whole segment of the French Renaissance is now resurfacing; and this exhibition sets out ro reveal its many and varied facets, its extravagance, and its monumental character.
DRAWING IN THE OPEN AIR. VARIATIONS OF DRAWINGS FROM NATURE IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE 19th CENTURY

After developing strongly in 17th century France (and Europe), drawing in the open air, from the motif, became current practice in the 18th. By the 19th century, it was considered a vital part of the training of young artists; constantly evolving, it became a primary aspect of the history of drawing. The meanings of the expressions "from nature," "after nature," "from life" and "from the motif" fluctuated, vague, covering as much observation and scientific study as study sketches, studen exercices, architectural surveys, military drawings, drawing from memory, travel illustrations, or the barest sketch of some fleeting impression. Drawing from nature gradually became viewed as an artwork in its own right, a finished piece with its own justification and purpose.
Staged with the exceptional support of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, the exhibition groups over one hundred drawings and etchings, along with aroung thirty sketchbooks, the ultimate instrument of plein-air drawing.
2017: THE YEAR OF FRANCE-COLOMBIA

As part of France-Colombia 2017, the Musée du Louvre pays tribute to Colombian heritage in the Spanish painting gallery with the display of two major pieces of Neogranadine art (i.e. from the Viceroyalty of New Granada, in the 18th century): the monstrance from the church of San gnacio in Bogotá, known as "La Lechuga" (the lettuce), a highly ornate piece of precious goldwork, and the statue of Saint Barbara, a wood sculpture that stands over two moters high profoundly influenced by the Seville school and a reference for all Colombian artists to this day.

MAURICE DENIS AND EUGÈNE DELACROIX: FROM STUDIO TO MUSEUM

The Musée National Eugène-Delacroix is holding a major exhibition, featuring some outstanding loans, to celebrate the painters such as Maurice Denis whose admiration for Delacroix (1798-1863) inspired them to turn the artist's last home and studio into a museum. The exhibition "Maurice Denis and Eugène Delacroix: from Studio to Museum" traces the history of a museum that now receives a wide range of visitors.
As the president of the Société des Amis d'Eugène Delacroix, Maurice Denis played a crucial role in the preservation of Delacroix's last studio on Place de Fürstenberg and its conversion into a Delacroix museum. He committed himself wholeheartedly to the project, investing his reputation as a great artist and assuming the role of director of the nascent institution.
The exhibition, supported by exceptional loans from French and international museums and private collections, will be the first to analyze and showcase the strength and scale of Delacroix's influence on these artist who were born after his death. It will also allow visitors to discover the recent renovation and extension of the museum.

Let the cymbals ring and the trumpest sound! The Musée du Louvre-Lens presents the very first exhibition devoted to music in the great ancient civilizations, from the East to Rome, through to Egypt and Greece.
Omnipresent in ancient societies, music fulfilled multiple functions. Performed by professional or amateur musicians, it marked the various stages of life, from birth to death. Played in battlefields and at the feasts of the powerful, it was also part of religious rituals and served as an intermediary between humans and the gods. Known by all and practiced by many, music thus provides museumsgoers with an original and universal window into lost civilizations and understanding their social, political, and religious structure. From Mesopotamian cylinder seals to monumental Roman reliefs, through to Egyptian papyri and Greek vases, the exhibition presents some 400 artworks of a wide variety. Often fragile, some of the pieces have never been shown to the public. They hail from the Louvre collection and around twenty French and international museums, including the National Archaeological Museum of Athens and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
ITALIAN PAINTINGS FROM NORTHERN FRANCE: DIALOGUES AND CONNECTIONS

Glass Pavilion
The Louvre-Lens Glass Pavilion serves as a showcase for the vibrant museum culture of the Hauts-de-France region with the presentation of themed exhibitions drawing exclusively from local art collections. Featuring a unique display that brings the Italian artworks of Picardy and the Nord-Pas-de-Calais face to face, the museum promises an ideal close to the "Heures italiennes" series held throughout 2017 in the Hauts-de-France region.
Fostering dialogue around four themes, the exhibition makes connections between some twenty paintings by Italian of the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries.
It proposes a fascinating counterpoint to the Italian masterpieces on display in the Galerie du Temps (Botticelli, Perugino, Raphael, Tintoretto, etc.) that precedes the Glass Pavilion.
