The Studio

A new discovery and creation centre at the heart of the Louvre

December 2021
From 15 december 2021, the Louvre’s workshops and training sessions will be held in the Studio, a brand new 1,200 square-metre space on Level -1 of the Richelieu wing, near the Petite Galerie and the permanent collections.
Visitors can learn more about the museum’s artworks and develop their own artistic skills by choosing from the wide range of activities on offer in the Forum reception and activity area or in the workshop rooms. The activities cater for   everyone – families, school groups, students and professionals of all ages, disabled and disadvantaged visitors – and are included in the museum admission ticket.
The Louvre is a place for artistic creation, open to all since 1793. Now more than ever, educational and social projects are central to its mission.

At the heart of the museum
The Studio is a new space in the Louvre, intended to help visitors feel at home. It reflects the museum’s ambitious strategy for improving the visitor experience through the development of art and cultural education. It will house all the museum’s workshops and training sessions and includes a reception and activity area called the Forum.
The Studio’s programmes will supplement the guided tours, storytelling activities and special weekend events already offered by the Louvre.

One Studio, two spaces
The space designed by the architects of the h2o (Paris) agency is modern, elegant and functional.
Located opposite the Petite Galerie, the Studio has a Forum and nine rooms for workshops and training sessions. There is also a special area designed with families in mind, with toilets, a baby care area and other amenities. The opening of the Studio has tripled the surface area dedicated to workshops and training.

Visitors to the Forum will enjoy free 20-minute workshops (no booking required) or use the materials provided to the public such as drawing supplies, board games and a reading corner.
The activities of the museum’s expert craftworkers, such as framers, gilders, painters and metalworkers, will also be presented in the Forum.

The second part of the Studio contains nine rooms for training sessions and free, pre-booked,  2-3 hour workshops. The varied and stimulating workshop programmes, catering for individuals and groups of all ages, will be changed every 3 months.
The Louvre, an accredited training organisation, will also offer a variety of training programmes in art history, cultural interpretation and project management. Throughout the year, events will be organised in collaboration with the museum’s partners, including schools, community centres and hospitals.

The creation of the Studio was made possible through the generosity of American Friends of the Louvre and the support of Avery and Andrew Barth.
The toilet facilities were funded through the generous support of TOTO.
The Louvre acknowledges the generous support of artists, Maisons and bidders towards the Studio through the ‘Bid for the Louvre’ auction.
